Zaptec chargers are cloud-first by design: your installer commissioned the unit into the Zaptec portal, and every session since then has been recorded there. If you drive a company car and charge at home, your employer can reimburse that electricity free of tax and National Insurance, as long as it is clear the electricity went into the company car. ChargeReport reads your Zaptec sessions and produces the monthly statement that makes that clear.
Supported Zaptec models
ChargeReport supports the following models of the Zaptec range natively, with no extra hardware:
- Zaptec Go
- Zaptec Go 2
- Zaptec Pro
- Zaptec Sense
If your model is not listed but has an OCPP 1.6J interface, it will most likely still work — our gateway accepts any OCPP 1.6J compliant charge point. If you are unsure, see our setup guide for wallbox brands or get in touch before you sign up.
Connect your Zaptec wallbox in 3 minutes
Three steps: (1) choose "Zaptec" in the ChargeReport wizard and sign in with your Zaptec portal credentials (OAuth — your password stays with Zaptec). (2) ChargeReport lists the chargers in your installation and you select the one used for the company car. (3) The first sync imports the previous 30 days, then runs every 15 minutes. Nothing on the charger changes, and your installer does not need to be involved.
What your employer can reimburse — and what they need from you
If you drive a company car in the UK, your employer can reimburse what it costs to charge it at home free of income tax and National Insurance — electricity is not treated as fuel for the car fuel benefit charge, so the exemption in s.239(2) ITEPA 2003 applies. HMRC attaches one condition to it: the employer has to be satisfied that the reimbursement is solely for the company car and not for the household. No particular meter or method is prescribed. ChargeReport reads every session from your Zaptec charger and turns it into a monthly statement — each session with date, time and kWh, plus monthly totals — which evidences exactly the separation HMRC asks for, in a form payroll can file.
More on the legal side: Company car home charging in the UK: what your employer can reimburse tax-free
Zaptec charging and your employer — who pays for the electricity?
Charging a company car at home is paid for by you first: it runs through your domestic electricity contract. Your employer can reimburse that amount without tax or National Insurance, but only for the electricity that went into the company car. That is the whole difficulty — a household meter cannot tell the car from the dishwasher, and an annual bill from your supplier cannot either. This is a different route from the 7p per mile advisory rate, which only ever covers business mileage and needs a mileage log rather than kWh. ChargeReport produces the evidence for the first route from the readings your Zaptec charger already takes.
Common questions about Zaptec & ChargeReport
Which Zaptec models work?+
Zaptec Go, Zaptec Go 2, Zaptec Pro and Zaptec Sense. All report into the same portal, so the setup is identical.
My charger is in a shared installation. Does that work?+
Yes — that is what Zaptec Pro is built for. ChargeReport reads the chargers your account has access to and you pick the one that matters. Sessions from other units in the installation are not pulled in.
Do I need a separate meter for HMRC?+
No. The UK prescribes no measuring method. HMRC's condition (EIM23900) is that the employer is satisfied the reimbursement relates solely to the company car — the technique is left open.
What if I also charge a private car on the same unit?+
Then the sessions need to be told apart, otherwise you cannot show the reimbursement is solely for the company car. Using the charger's own authorisation to distinguish drivers is the straightforward way; ChargeReport keeps the resulting sessions separate.
How long does setup take?+
About three minutes, and it is entirely in software. No site visit, no firmware update, no changes to your home network.
