The Zappi is the charger most likely to be paired with solar panels, and that turns out to matter for reimbursement. If you drive a company car and charge at home, your employer can cover the electricity free of tax and National Insurance — but only the electricity that actually went into the company car. With a Zappi there is a second line to draw: what came from the grid and what came off your own roof. ChargeReport reads both from your myenergi account and keeps them apart in the monthly statement.
Supported myenergi Zappi models
ChargeReport supports the following models of the myenergi Zappi range natively, with no extra hardware:
- Zappi v2.1
If your model is not listed but has an OCPP 1.6J interface, it will most likely still work — our gateway accepts any OCPP 1.6J compliant charge point. If you are unsure, see our setup guide for wallbox brands or get in touch before you sign up.

myenergi exposes a REST API through the myenergi hub and the myaccount portal. Three steps: (1) generate an API key in the myenergi app or at myaccount.myenergi.com under Settings → API Access, and note your hub serial number. (2) Paste both into the ChargeReport wizard. (3) The sync starts and imports the last 30 days of sessions, so your first statement is complete. The Zappi has to be paired with a hub for this — a standalone installation without one has no cloud to read from.
What your employer can reimburse — and what they need from you
If you drive a company car in the UK, your employer can reimburse what it costs to charge it at home free of income tax and National Insurance — electricity is not treated as fuel for the car fuel benefit charge, so the exemption in s.239(2) ITEPA 2003 applies. HMRC attaches one condition to it: the employer has to be satisfied that the reimbursement is solely for the company car and not for the household. No particular meter or method is prescribed. ChargeReport reads every session from your myenergi Zappi charger and turns it into a monthly statement — each session with date, time and kWh, plus monthly totals — which evidences exactly the separation HMRC asks for, in a form payroll can file.
Because the Zappi is so often paired with solar, the statement always shows grid and solar kWh as separate lines rather than a single total. Which of the two your employer covers is a matter for your own arrangement — the statement makes sure the question can be answered at all.
More on the legal side: Company car home charging in the UK: what your employer can reimburse tax-free
myenergi Zappi charging and your employer — who pays for the electricity?
Charging a company car at home is paid for by you first: it runs through your domestic electricity contract. Your employer can reimburse that amount without tax or National Insurance, but only for the electricity that went into the company car. That is the whole difficulty — a household meter cannot tell the car from the dishwasher, and an annual bill from your supplier cannot either. This is a different route from the 7p per mile advisory rate, which only ever covers business mileage and needs a mileage log rather than kWh. ChargeReport produces the evidence for the first route from the readings your myenergi Zappi charger already takes.
Common questions about myenergi Zappi & ChargeReport
Does ChargeReport separate solar charging from grid charging?+
Yes, and on a Zappi that separation is unusually clean. Eco+ charges from surplus solar only, Fast charges from the grid only, and Eco mixes. ChargeReport records the mode per session and splits the kWh accordingly, so both figures appear in the statement.
Can my employer reimburse the solar-charged kWh too?+
That depends on the arrangement between you and your employer, and it is worth asking before you assume either way — the electricity from your own roof did not come off a bill. The statement reports both amounts separately so the question can actually be answered rather than guessed.
Which Zappi versions are supported?+
The Zappi v2.1 via the myenergi hub. Earlier units that predate the hub integration have no cloud API to read from.
What exactly does my employer need from me?+
HMRC's guidance (EIM23900) puts the condition on the employer: they need to be satisfied the reimbursement is solely for the company car. There is no prescribed form and no prescribed meter — a monthly statement listing each session with date, time and kWh is what makes that demonstrable.
Do I need a separate meter fitted?+
No. The UK sets no measuring requirement — that is a German rule, not a British one. Your Zappi already records what it delivered; the gap is getting those numbers into a form payroll can file.
